day 1487: Intellectual Virtues

“…We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort, though I could have confidence in my own effort if anyone could.”

The New York Times columnist, David Brooks, wrote recently of a book that was published in 2007 (yes books can hang around and get noticed many years later), by Robert C. Roberts of Baylor University and W. Jay Wood of Wheaton College called, “Intellectual Virtues”.  In their book they call out those virtues to be:

  • Learning
  • Courage
  • Firmness
  • Humility
  • Autonomy
  • Generosity

Now, imagine seeing these posted on the CEO’s door as the values that she works and conducts business by!  Is it too much conjecture that if we were to work for (or be managers and leaders) who subscribed to these work virtues that we would be working in a great place with great people?  Lots of companies and lots of people state values but fall short actually of putting their work to their words. Now is a great time to reevaluate what intellectual virtues to which we have subscribed.

God gives us all the strength we need to stand strong and firm in our belief in Him!  Let us today have the confidence and courage to stand and align our values to Him, not with what are our own efforts or human values!
