day 2940: Ability To Rewind

“Fear God,” he shouted. “Give glory to him. For the time has come when he will sit as judge. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and all the springs of water.”

Lou Ottens has died. If you don’t know the name, you know his inventions.  First, was a small piece of technology called the cassette tape. Later, another technology called the compact disc (CD).  Both were revolutionary, gaining worldwide acceptance and use for decades.  And both have faded now into a place of nostalgia.  The cassette tape was not only revolutionary in its size and ability to access for recording, it was also the first time that the mass consumer (who didn’t own a reel-to-reel tape player; mostly it was the HiFi audiofiles who had one) could rewind.  8-Track tapes let us fast forward but not rewind.  The ability to rewind was a revolution as we could play over and over from our cars, our Sony Walkmans, etc., the hits and the songs we loved.

As much as we might like, we can’t rewind everything in life.  Time only moves forward and forward in time is the path of our lives.  What we do with our time today matters.  Spending any moment trying to rewind will leave us only melancholy and longing for something that cannot be returned.  We have hope of of a time to come when we are reunited with Christ and that is more than enough to keep us looking for eternity. But for now, let’s look forward to each day and hour as this being our time to bring glory to Him!
