day 1993: Quitting

“You have patiently suffered for me without quitting.”

Sometimes, we just have to quit.  And in those times, we should do so not because we are tired or discouraged, but because we are convinced that continuing the pursuit is now harming us or leading us in a direction that is not good for us any longer.  We can see this in acquisitions and mergers.  Two companies will spend an enormous amount of time in pursuit of the deal, but at some point one party or the other learns enough about each other, or the hurdles to completing the deal for one reason or another become insurmountable, and the parties come to the realization that continuing to go any further is of decreasing value.  It’s a hard point to discern and can be emotionally hard to accept, but it is the best course of action when the bad starts to overtake the good.

God understands that we are not perfect and in the race of life, we are going to want to quit and He acknowledges that we are going to want to say we quit, and we will say it to ourselves and to others.  And while that is not good, what is more important is that we truly don’t ever quit the race that He has put before us.  You see, there is nothing in the pursuit of God’s will for us that will do us harm.  We can never become worse as a person.  We can only become better. So, when we think about quitting on what God is calling us to do, let’s be sure and think twice and then get right back in the race.
