day 2168: What’s a DVD?

“And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching.”

It was ten years ago this week that NetFlix moved their business model from DVDs to Streaming.  Those red DVD envelopes were once so ubiquitous that the US Post Offices had a special mail slot just for NetFlix DVD returns.  The Netflix DVDs put Blockbuster out of business and then Netflix decided that in order to lead the future, they’d have to put themselves out of business and they did. They moved to a streaming model and not without some controversy and choppy waters they shifted and before long we stopped moving DVDs across the country.  As of now, they are 90 million streaming subscribers strong and still growing.  And today, ask a teenager if they have every played a movie or a TV show on DVD?  You might hear back, “What’s a DVD?”

It is tricky to understand what it is that we should move with and what we shouldn’t.  What we can be assured is Jesus’ commandments to us still remain unmovable, and will continue to stand true through the test of time.  How that message is delivered is always changing and how we adapt to being able to reach a new generation is also part of how we will be able to do our best to reflect Jesus to others.
