day 1920: Pacing

“I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”

How do we know if we are pacing ourselves correctly?  How do we know if we will finish strong, or even finish at all? Of course, we believe we will, but it’s hard to know exactly if we are pacing ourselves for completion until it is over.  Our careers, our current jobs, our projects, etc. all require pacing.  Sometimes we have to go fast and other times we can slow down, but what is most important is that we finish and when we do, we can and want to start again.  I’ve seen too many teams fall over a finish line and then be resentful of their boss and company.  But, when a team is paced correctly, there is joy in the finish line and excitement about what could be next.  When in doubt, consider pacing as critical for success.

I heard a pastor teach that we are paced by grace.  At first it didn’t sink in, but after thinking about, it is so true.  You see, when we exercise grace, that is how our pace is to be established.  We can rush through our day and our lives, and miss many opportunities to demonstrate how God’s grace can make a difference in the lives of others.  When we allow grace to pace us, then we finish well and faithfully.
