“Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.”
There is a range of choices we can make with our language in business. We can choose optimistic, encouraging, hopeful and reinforcing words, or we can choose critical, harsh and demeaning words. We can also choose to lace our language with expletives to “seemingly” emphasize our point. Language truly matters as author Will Giudara says, “Language is how you give intention to your intuition and how you share your vision with others. Language is
how you create a culture.” Yes, language is the most visible indicator of our culture. Think about that.
Paul was pretty clear with the Ephesians on the type of language we are not to use. He knew that the culture of the church was at stake as well as the witness of the leaders. If his instruction was good for them, thousands of years ago, it is still good for us today.
