“As the light approaches, the earth takes shape like clay pressed beneath a seal; it is robed in brilliant colors.”

I received this in an email from an art gallery here in town who was presenting a number of their paintings that happen to have orange as the dominant color. “In color psychology, the color orange is optimistic and uplifting – it lifts our spirits. In fact, orange is so optimistic and uplifting It’s a great color to keep us motivated and help us look at the bright side of life. With great enthusiasm, the color orange calls for adventure and risk-taking, physical confidence, competition and independence.The color orange relates to social communication and it encourages two-way conversation. It is a warm and welcoming color that is both physically and mentally stimulating. It makes people think as well as speak.”  I never knew this but always wondered why the color orange was used so much for things like sports teams, fitness gyms, children’s church curriculum, etc.   Now that I know, it is something to consider the next time I put together a presentation or want to get people thinking in an active way.  Colors can be powerful in how we communicate and present ourselves and we should do our best to make sure our colors match who and what we want to be.  Our true colors, you might say.

If God is light and Jesus is the light of the world, then we are His prisms to which that light that carries all colors, shines into the world.  When we speak of true colors we typically mean what are those values and principles that we really operate within and when the pressure is on what comes out of us.  If our true colors in our work are not ones that others would recognize as the light that Christ wants us to emulate, then we are missing our opportunity to shine for Him.  Let’s consider that as we go about our work of shining today.
