day 2150: The Future

“There is more than enough room in my Father’s home.If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?  When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.”

I was looking at all the movies that are coming out this holiday season.  I am sure you notice like I do that the pictures that are made about the future are seldom happy, uplifting or positive.  A dystopianfuture is what gets portrayed over and over.  Add in post-apocalyptic to that and I guess for Hollywood there is a blockbuster in the making.  But imagine that we each went to work everyday thinking that this prevalent image of the future of what we were to expect.  Most of us would never get out of the house, or much less want to work.  So, we create our own version of the future and it is that optimism and hope that keeps us going.  There is a group I know, The Institute of the Future, who recently had this to say in one of their newsletters: “The future is still a safe place. It’s a place where we can imagine beyond the confusion of today to create a world that everyone can inhabit with their bodies, their hearts, and their spirit. ”  I’m with them and we all should be if we want our teams and people to meet their full potential. Painting a bleak version of the future only creates anxiety and fear, neither which motivate us to do our best work.

God’s version of the future not only can keep us motivated and inspired, it also can lift us out of those times when the near-term future looks dire.  No man’s version of the future can do that, only God’s.  So, when we wonder what is next or around the corner, let’s go back to where Jesus is today  and what He is up to right now for us!
