day 1969: Cultures And Moral Systems

“And people will come from all over the world—from east and west, north and south—to take their places in the Kingdom of God.”

We spend a lot of time talking about corporate culture and how we can make it better.  And much of that time is spent on activities and things that at the end of the day don’t really make that much difference.  What makes the most difference in establishing and making a difference with a culture is ensuring that the values and principles of the people are right.  Jonathan Haidt in his book, The Righteous Mind” reminds us that cultures are really moral systems that allow for things to work together correctly and efficiently.  He writes: “Moral systems are interlocking sets of values, virtues, norms, practices, identities, institutions, technologies, and evolved psychological mechanisms that work together to suppress or regulate self-interest and make cooperative societies possible”.  If we don’t have the moral system right, how can we expect anything else to come together in a good way?

Paul reminds us that we are all the collectively the Kingdom of God.  When thought of that way it puts responsibility and accountability on us to do our part to assure that we are strong and building to be stronger in our faith.  What we do today matters.  How e conduct ourselves and strengthen our faith could be the difference of another doing the same, or not.  We are all interconnected by what we we believe and what we have accepted from God.  What are we doing with that today?
