day 2207: Two-Factor Authentication

“What sorrow awaits the world, because it tempts people to sin. Temptations are inevitable, but what sorrow awaits the person who does the tempting.”

I was never all that interested in fishing, but I know people who seriously are including my neighbor at our place in Rhode Island.  Barry will get up well before dawn so that he can be out on his ocean kayak as the sun is rising and the Striped Bass (Stripers) are feeding.  He loves it and he has the patience and commitment to study, learn, experiment and wait so that he can hook the big one.  It’s Barry’s disposition and temperament that carries over to why it is called “Phishing” on the internet.  These Phishers are always out there, patiently dropping their always changing hooks in front of us hoping that we will bite and when we do, they have us!  So, that brings us to Two-Factor Authentication. If you aren’t already being asked to do this, you will be soon.  Remember the Key Fobs we carried around last decade that randomly generated a number string that we would use along with our passwords?  That was early-day Two-Factor Authentication but the reason we will all be doing it soon is because we have our smartphones that now can act as the hardware to generate the number string.  We will log in and before our password is accepted, we will be asked to enter the Authentication numbers, which will be generated on an App or texted to us, to which we can then access physically, live on our phones and then enter in that number string and then we are allowed to log in.  The Phishers are left with just a hook and worm.  Nothing is fail safe, but Two-Factor Authentication is as good as we can have…for now.

God gave us more than Two-Factor Authentication that we have a Savior in whom we can believe, follow and surrender ourselves. I see Three Factor Authentication: He was born and lived a perfect sinless life.  He was crucified and died on our behalf.  He rose from the dead and lives today.  What else do we need?  There is another who is always phishing for our lives and we need to be constantly alert and aware and when the temptations are dangled in front of us, allow our Three-Factor Authentication to deter us from getting phished.
