It’s nearly universal that workers should get at least one day off a week.  From the earliest of thinking about work, it has been that way and many decisions that employers have made can be traced back to the principle of the Sabbath and that if God rested, then we should as well.  From a human standpoint, we need rest to be able to perform at our best.  We don’t need to look further than all of the research, technology and efforts that are being made to improve our sleep patterns.  So many times it is hard to measure how our brains work so that we can compare our performance or productivity from when we are well rested to when we are tired. A simple one for me lately has been the word game, Wordle.  I have a pattern that I use (of course, I think I have the algorithm figured out) and I’ve noticed that when I am tired, I make mistakes more than when I am rested.  So, if I am messing up Wordle, what else am I not doing well that isn’t so obvious?

So why is work a gift that leads to Sabbath?  Well, without God having done the work that He did, which was quite an accomplishment that we should be thankful for each and every day, then would He have instructed us to rest and give a day back to Him?  The Sabbath always reminds me how God is so in tune with us as He knew that without giving us many reasons (Sabbath being a clear one) to turn back to Him, that we’d continue to go 24-7 hard and too often away from Him.  So, the next time we are tired from our work, let’s remember that it is a gift to to remind us that Sabbath is needed and Sabbath is coming.
