day 2616: Stuff

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.”

We all carry around “stuff” literally and figuratively.  Nothing says it more than the The Atlantic reported that “the number of self-storage units is rapidly increasing. There are around 52,000 such facilities nationally; two decades ago, there were half that number.” Once we have “stuff” we don’t want to get rid of it.  Why?  We should probably all take a class in uncluttering and cleaning out.  I’m a big fan of the “hoteling” model that many companies are now taking. Rather than someone having one office that they fill each day (with themselves and their stuff) they move around from place to place and when they are not in the office, someone else can sit where they would be, making the use of office space much more efficient. I also know that this concept of moving around helps with the management of records retention…that is not keeping too much stuff around physically or digitally.

How are to think about our “stuff” of this world?  Jesus makes it pretty clear.  If we are storing up “stuff” in our lives. physical or emotionally, He tells us to turn it over to Him and not hold onto the things that will eventually be worth nothing to us or what is holding us back from depending on Him even more.  It’s about time in the year for “Spring Cleaning” and a great time to start or get in the habit of a daily cleaning out process.
