“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…”

I was trying to explain something the other day and the best way I could explain it was to say “it’s like a Venn Diagram” and immediately we could all imagine the sweet spot in the intersection of the circles.  I wonder if John Venn in 1880 knew that what he was researching would stick around for so long?  Here is what he wrote that then became the establishment of the Venn Diagrams: “Schemes of diagrammatic representation have been so familiarly introduced into logical treatises during the last century or so, that many readers, even those who have made no professional study of logic, may be supposed to be acquainted with the general nature and object of such devices. Of these schemes one only, viz. that commonly called ‘Eulerian circles,’ has met with any general acceptance…”. So, who was Eulerian?  He was Leonhard Euler, the most renowned mathematician of his time (1707-1783).  John Venn could have taken all the credit, but instead he credited Euler, but we still remember these as Venn Diagrams.  You see, when we intersect what we do with others, we shouldn’t take all the credit, but instead realize that others have as much input and contribution as we have.  We need more of this!

There is no greater Venn Diagram than the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  And do you know who sits right in the center of the intersection?  Think hard about it.  Got it?  That’s right, we do!  What an amazing image to conjure up; God the Father, Jesus His Son, and the Holy Spirit all there so we could reside in the middle of the three as His creation to work and live among all the rest of His creations.  On this Friday, take a moment and reflect on what it means to be the center of God’s attention and love!  It’s pretty awesome (and from now on with every Venn Diagram, let it be a trigger to remember this)!
