day 1465: Changing Of The Guard

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.”

I’ve been listening to golfers, from the US and from Europe, talk about the upcoming Ryder Cup Tournament.  Everyone has their own opinion as to who will win, but there is a consistent theme about the “changing of the guard?  The young turks are at the top of their game and for the first time in 20 years, this weekend’s FedEx Cup Player’s Championship doesn’t have Tiger or Phil playing. And somehow we pine for those who have left their prime and wish that Tom Watson could win one more British Open, or that someone will prove that they are timeless.  A childhood friend just posted on Facebook that he is retiring and leaving a leadership position he has held for 10 years.  The comments back have as much to do with people recognizing their own age and mortality as they do for his milestone marking.  We like to hang onto to timelessness and the changing of the guard always brings out something inside of us where have to grasp that change is also about us!

God’s guard over us never changes.  He is timeless and makes us so if we believe and follow Him.  How often daily do we remember this when we are stressed out, resentful or jealous over something that someone has done to us or something that just happened?  It could be a good time to begin to have a change of perspective and not let work and life become the driver of our restlessness but instead settle in the peace of knowing that God will never leave us and that what we are truly living for is the time that we will sit with Him eternally, under His guard.
