day 2008: “We’ll Leave A Light On For You”

“No longer will you need the sun to shine by day, nor the moon to give its light by night, for the Lord your God will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.”

Motel 6 created iconic advertising with their spokesperson, Tom Bodette. Tom’s famous sign off slogan said, “And we’ll leave a light on for you”. What great imagery as we walk up to an unfamiliar place to have a sense of security added that there is a light on at the entry for us to be able to enter safely and more easily. How often do we consider if we are leaving a light on for our customers and consumers? We really don’t have any choice but to do so, because the alternative is that we are asking them to find us in the dark.

God uses light as one of the primary descriptors of His presence. I’m sure there are hundreds of references to light in the Bible. And ultimately, He becomes the light to our salvation as the antecedent to an eternity in the darkness. And God did something else with each of us, He told the world that He was leaving a light on for us; each and every day we experience those people in our lives who shine brightly for Him. As you know, I love technology and the improvements that come as the future arrives. Today as I replace standard incandescent or halogen lights with LEDs, I am reminded that these are the last light bulbs that I might change in my lifetime. And so I also want to be like that for God:  A light that lasts a lifetime, always brightly shining at full intensity, left on by God for others to see their way to Him. May we all be so!
