day 3K296: Familect

“My words are plain to anyone with understanding, clear to those with knowledge.”

I’ve always known that Families have their own dialect that those outside of the family wouldn’t understand.  In our family we called Ketchup, “Fall”.  As I understand it I termed it that once as a child because I thought it funny that it “fell” out of the bottle.  It stuck and became part of our Familect.  Yes, companies do it as well.  We create acronyms for projects and initiatives that become our own language that an outsider or a newbie have no way of understanding or knowing.  This is not always a good thing as new hires can feel lost for a long time and also can become intimidated to ask what words mean, leading to misunderstandings and loss of productivity.  So, a little familiar dialect can be a good thing, but it needs to be balanced to be sure it doesn’t become a hindrance.

We are God’s family and indeed He has given us our own Familect as we speak to Him, He speaks to us, Scripture we read and how we speak to others.  The Holy Spirit works through our reading, worship and words to bring us closer together and to be unified as one for His glory.  We can deepen our Familect with the closer and closer we seek His knowledge and to be in communion with Him.
