day 2657: Hit a Nerve

“Do everything without complaining…”

Last week’s post on “Stop the Complaining, Already” hit a nerve, in a positive way.  It appears that complaining is more of a problem than we talk about, so it felt like it was worth the extra effort today to break format and go deeper on the topic.  Paul’s short, but concise and pointed direction to the Philippians clearly states that we are not to complain, especially if we are avoiding being criticized or questioned.  When we complain about whatever; our boss, our peers, our spouses, our kids, our neighbors, our laws, our politicians, our bills, our taxes, our weather, our infirmities (aches and pains), do I need to go on…we open ourselves up to be criticized, challenged, and even to have our motives to be suspected.  We just don’t have to go there, but we do.

I decided to take Philippians 2:14 and just check out what other versions of the Bible translate the word “complaining”. Here is what I found:

  • Complaining (New Living Translation)
  • Murmuring (New Kings James Version)
  • Grumbling and Faulting (Amplified Bible)
  • Kvetching (Complete Jewish Bible)
  • No Second Guessing (The Message)
  • (no) talking about how you wish you did not have to do them (New Life Version)
  • Without grutchings and doubtings (Wycliffe Bible)

Murmuring….grumbling…second guessing…doubting…talking about what we wished we didn’t have to do…all are complaining. Sometimes out loud. Sometimes under our breath. Sometimes in whispers.  Sometimes online in a text, an email, a post or a share.  However we translate it, is not of God and not how we are supposed to be.  Let’s start this week on a high note and leave the low notes of complaining to someone else.
