day 2886: Thy Will Be Done

“Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.”

As we rise this morning, here in the United States, it is our Presidential Election Day.  It only comes once every four years, but in these days the election cycle runs continuously it seems.  So, by the time it is Election Day, we are so ready for it to all be over and decided.  What we know this year is that the outcome may not be decided by tonight and we may be waiting just a little longer than usual.  What we also know is that across our country there are many millions of people who will be exercising their faith and praying for the outcome.  It would be fascinating to see how God tallies up those prayers, but let’s be thankful that He isn’t about answering prayers on popularity or polling standards.  God answers prayers without favoritism so that when we pray for a binary outcome we desire, like, “Please Lord, let _________ win this election!” there are multiple answers He can give us:

  1. Yes, now
  2. Yes, later
  3. No, now
  4. No, later
  5. No, never

But, when we pray as we are instructed with always qualifying our prayers with, “Thy will be done”, our prayers are always answered in the affirmative because if our will is truly His will, then we can be assured that our prayers have been heard and answered as they should have been.

So, our challenge will be as Believers, to say our prayers, but to accept whatever the outcome as “God’s will”, as “unlikable” as the result might be.  He gives us Romans 8:28 for a time such as this so that we know that all things work together for our good, if we only truly believe and truly surrender to His will!  I personally know, being very involved in the activity of politics (I believe Believers need to be at the table) how hard this is and it may be that I will be tested against my own words.  But if that is so, then that is what I/we must accept, or I/we are telling God with our actions, that His will is not acceptable to us.  Note:  that, is not a place where any of us want to go.  So, let’s pray into God’s will to be done and rest assured He has this already all figured out.
