day 2723: Always Working

“Two men will be working together in the field; one will be taken, the other left.”

How many times do we just feel like we are always working and will do just about anything to get away and get some rest.  I have some bad news.  The work we do tomorrow (literally and metaphorically) will feel more and more like we are always working.  Sure, we will be able to run and hide every now and then, and we should, but technology is going to continue to intersect our lives and add more and more opportunities for work to be with us all the time.  Need I say more than see someone look at the watch on their wrist as an email comes in on a Saturday night during dinner.  Work interruptions like that were once reserved for those who labored over life and death as their profession.  But, now it is everyone, and it will be even more so, that is unless we decide (from the top) that this won’t be the way we work and we place strong guard rails around allowing work to invade all times and ways that we live.

I am not dissing work.  Work is so important.  Jesus spent a bunch of time talking about work in His Parables.  Nearly all of them have some element of work in them.  He was conversant (way more than most who have been called to ministry) on how we work and how it relates to His Kingdom. Think teaching and parables of the lazy and less than honest and ungrateful workers.  And more than once we learn of those who are faithful managers.  And, I find it fascinating that even at the end of time, we find that two men working in the field is used to provide us the picture of what will happen. So, what does this mean for us?  I take it that we are to look for the positives in our work and seek to find meaning, purpose and joy in our work because work, well, it’s not going away any time soon.
