day 2060: The Unexpected

“Mary!” Jesus said.  She turned to him and cried out, “Rabboni!” (which is Hebrew for “Teacher”).”

Sometimes we can get so sure of how and what things should appear that we begin to expect things to be one way, and then when they turn into the unexpected, we can get knocked off balance and everything needs to be rethought. That was part of my experience in Cuba last week. I went expecting the way it would be and when I got there it was different in so many ways.  I still haven’t wrapped my head around what has happened and what should happen now, but the country might be one of the few last left places in the world where the unexpected is what shows up.

Mary Magdalene, Peter, John and the rest of the Disciples were sure of Jesus’ death.  They’d known for certain that He had died on the cross and been sealed in His tomb.  But then when Mary heard the risen Jesus speak her name, the unexpected became real.  That’s the thing with our Lord, He is in the business of bringing us the unexpected and turning them into miracles. Let’s not forget that when He opens and door for us, or brings us to a person who needs our words and love, or when we feel the hand of Him within our own healing.
