day 2032: Shining Lights

“Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you.”

Happy back to the workweek after the three day weekend. I spent a good amount of the time cleaning out papers and stuff. I came across a Business Week article that I had torn out and kept.  It was from May 23, 2005.  That was almost 11 years ago.  In the article the headline was, “Nick Holonyak’s LEDs may soon make incandescent and fluorescent bulbs obsolete”.  In 2005, this was a provocative statement.  After all, he had invented the light bulb in 1962.  But now, 11 years later, I refuse to buy an incandescent bulb and the price of LEDs have come down to where it doesn’t make much sense to buy anything else. What can we expect to be the next thing that seems too far away today to ever happen but in must over a decade it could be a household standard?

Nick Holonyak created a new way to shine with his little light emitting diode.  His light will now shine for as far as we can see.  And I suspect that he didn’t have any idea in 1962 that his invention would be so widely accepted.  We each have our own light that we relight to shine each and every day.  And little also do we know where that light will shine and for how long to bring glory to God?
