day 2617: Extended Intelligence

“As the Scriptures say, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.”

I read a piece from MIT’s, Joi Ito trying to put in context artificial intelligence and machine learning and what it really means as to the threats, fears and challenges and what we should expect.  It’s clear, that we need to be thinking about this and trying to understand as best we can so that we can direct, shape and put up guardrails.  Ito says, this, “Instead of thinking about machine intelligence in terms of humans vs machines, we should consider the system that integrates humans and machines – not artificial intelligence but extended intelligence. Instead of trying to control or design or even understand systems, it is more important to design systems that participate as responsible, aware and robust elements of even more complex systems.” So, he is telling us to go into building AI and Machine Learning software withe eyes wide open and if we get it right then we will not replace human intelligence, but instead extend it.

Wherever “intelligence” ends up, we can rest assured that the knowledge that rules it all is the knowledge of God and being willing to not allow all of the other forces to confuse us or dilute our faith and belief. The scriptures made it clear that if we don’t allow ourselves to be extended beyond the world’s intelligence to rest in God’s Word, then we will be missing out on all He will reveal to us.
