In read an article on why startups should make sure they have an accountant all set and ready to go from the earliest days of the company.  It’s a smart move.  Not only because it’s important to be sure that the expenses are accounted for, accounts set up, etc. but also because the patterns of the company as it relates to money are established from day one and if they are not set up the right way, then those patterns become something hard to change later.  Establishing real accounting and process, after the informal practices have been in place, can break up a company and cause feelings of doubt and even mistrust that would never have needed to be there if things would have been set up correct from the get go.

Author and speaker Andy Crouch explains money in this way.  He says that there are three things that we do with money: Count, Store or Transfer.  All three of those can end up creating our need to control our financial resources, beyond how we are supposed to do so.  What that leaves us with is that we are doing our own accounting, when instead we should remember that all of our resources don’t sit on our ledger, but instead on God’s.  If we are caught up in the control of counting, storing or transferring, it means it’s time we call in the Great Accountant to settle us up.
