day 1897: Core Convictions

“Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me – a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus.”

I was talking to an Executive Director of a non-profit who was going through the new mission statement of his organization, which he was very proud and had taken much time to complete.  But, when I heard it, it sounded very “vanilla” and I could have substituted any organization into the statement and when that happens it’s not going to be very exciting to anyone.  I had been to a church recently who talked about their mission, which as they said, “is the same mission of every other church, so we have spelled out our ‘Three Core Convictions'”.  These are the unique identifiers and what keeps them grounded to who they really are and who they aren’t.  I admire that approach and more organizations (for profit and non-profit) should do the same.  Just three things that we feel convicted to be and so much could come from it.  Pretty powerful.

We could be better at bringing glory to God in our work if we also knew our three core convictions in how we want to bring glory to Him.  These would be the three unique identifiers of our situation, skills, experiences, opportunities, or even how we overcome our challenges.  I’m convinced that the more we ask God to reveal who He wants us to be for Him, those convictions come closer and closer into the pattern of who we are. I am going to work on mine and encourage all to do the same.
