day 3K149: Key Man Clause

“Oh, don’t worry; we wouldn’t dare say that we are as wonderful as these other men who tell you how important they are! But they are only comparing themselves with each other, using themselves as the standard of measurement. How ignorant!”
I was going through some financing documents and saw that there was a “Keyman Clause” for the Founders and others on the Executive Team.  These clauses for Funders is to make them comfortable that the people on the team that they are investing in will be there for a prescribed timeframe.  On one hand, having people who are that important to the success of the company can feel validating.  But on the other hand, if we have built our companies around certain people who are so vital to the success of the company that if they left there wouldn’t be a confidence that the company could move forward, it is a failure.  Sure, we need “key people” but the better solution is to build a corps of talent who become a deep bench.  A certain NBA team I like and follow runs on “Strength in Numbers” and if you are on that team, you have to be ready to step on the court in a key position for every game.  It’s risky to get dependent on only a few people to lead the way.
If God had designed His Kingdom with only “Key People” to expand and grow, it would have died out with the deaths of Moses, Joseph, David, John the Baptist, Paul, the Apostles, etc. They each went the way we will go and while important at the time and key to moving the Kingdom forward, they are replaced with you and me to carry on.  We are each “key” in the heart of God and He looks to us to act as such.  However, He does not want us to act as if we are most important in the eyes of others. If we take this into our own hearts today, what difference will it make in how we work to bring Him glory?
