day 2022: Small Ball

“If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones…”

Okay, forgive me for over promoting The Golden State Warriors.  But, there is much to like about them beyond their winning record.  They are a true team and even though they have the best player in the world on their team, they play together in a way that demonstrates how all are stars, not one.  Their other distinguishing factor is that they play what Coach Steve Kerr calls, “Small Ball”.  This is when the fastest, quickest and most agile five players take the court and thus, they are without the biggest players.  And, “small ball” dominates right now in the NBA.  It’s a good example for all us as we field our teams.  The traditional can be upset by the unconventional.  Speed of change can beat heft and muscle.  Selflessness across a team can allow for superstars to play with others that makes everyone better.  In 2016, it might be that “small ball” would be a good playbook.

We just finished celebrating the entrance into the world of our Savior and as we so intimately know, He came to earth as a baby, born in the exact same way you and I were born, at the smallest point we will ever be.  He could have come in any way, but He chose to do so in a small way.  You see, God knows that it is in the small that we see the true spirit and love of Jesus.  There was never anything “big” about Him.  Each and every move He made was done in a way that shunned the spotlight and the fame.  It is good for us to remember as we enter the New Year that we need to bring our “Small Game” each and everyday.
